The first of two exciting harness racing meetings over the weekend is in Hobart tonight, with heats of the Breeders Crown three-year-old Series the highlight.

A field of five will contest the fillies division over 2090 metres including two runners from the Karoola stables of Dick Eaves, Courageous Katee and El Jays Mystery.

Courageous Katee started her career at Maryborough on June 1 last year, winning on debut in impressive style by 5 1/2 metres. The then two-year-old was beaten by a half-head when fourth in the Listed Vicbred Silver Series before finishing mid-field in the $280,000 Breeders Crown Final at Melton. A four-month spell was to follow, but on her return in January, she failed to recapture her two-year-old form.

Courageous Katee arrived in the state in March for a tilt at the grade 3 Tasmanian Oaks but could only manage fifth behind mainland invader Shartin. Eaves successfully convinced connections that she should continue her career in Tasmania and promptly proceeded to weave his magic.

Tonight she is gunning for her third straight victory after two impressive Launceston wins, including her last start sub two-minute performance.

Eaves is no stranger to preparing top three-year-old fillies. In the early 90’s Dick guided the career of champion youngster Kanungra Koala. The filly, along with fellow Tasmanian stars Roses Heart and Nellie Robins made the 1992 Oaks features around the country their own.

Kanungra Koala proved victorious over Tasmanian Oaks winner Roses Heart in the NSW Oaks, before going down by a half neck to Nellie Robins in the Victorian Oaks. 30 years on, Dick masterminded the successful career of the brilliant Barynya, taking her to glory in the Tasmanian Oaks before capturing the $150,000 Victorian Oaks in the 2013/14 season.
