ASTUTE thoroughbred trainer Kath Kennedy will give her promising three-year-old The Financier the opportunity to win a feature race before he takes a well-earned spell.

Kennedy, who shares a training partnership with her niece Kirstin Whelan, confirmed her intention to run The Financier in the $30,000 Autumn 3YO Classic over 1400m in Launceston on Sunday following the gelding’s impressive win in a class one handicap at Spreyton on Sunday.

The Financier won his maiden over 1350 metres at his previous start on the synthetic which convinced Kennedy that the gelding had turned the corner.

“I have been wanting to put a pair of blinkers on this horse for some time but I wanted to wait until I thought he had matured enough and when I put them on two starts back he won and it has changed his whole attitude to racing,” Kennedy said.

“This latest win has convinced me he is ready to go up against some of the better three-year-olds so I’ll give him his chance next Sunday.”

With the exception of Chillout and Angel of the Abyss the race has attracted 11 nominations of which most have won no more than two races.

Chillout is likely to start favourite given he is a multiple winner on the Mowbray circuit and he comes off an impressive win in the $25,000 Autumn Sprint in Hobart and he drops in weight for this next assignment owing to the handicap conditions of the race.
