Meeting Dashboard – Devonport, Sunday 23 April

We come off a huge card at Launceston on Sunday night where trainer driver Todd Rattray continued his dominance winning the biggest Cup off them all when he partnered his stable star Pachacuti to a sensational win in the Easter Cup coming off the back mark off 40m. I would put that right up there with the best I’ve seen in the State in my time in the game.

We head up to the North West Coast this weekend for the heats of the Four Year Old Sires Stakes which are the Raider Stakes for the Colts and Geldings and the Granny Smith for the Mares.

RACE 1: 3:46pm CUB BELMONT 1930M

This is for the two year old fillies. INVEST (2) has been very consistent all season and this looks like it will be her day to shine. She draws well and with inform reinsman Todd Rattray in the gig he should be to dictate from there and whatever beats her will win. MODART NIADH (6) was good on debut and you can forget about her latest run when nothing went right. She looks a handy filly in the making so with a touch of luck from her wide draw will be in the finish. LADY OLIVE OYLE (1) has drawn ideally to figure as will get a good run from her pole draw so will pay to keep safe. MISS SUPERBIA (3) looked like she was going to run a place or a minor first four spot on debut before being tightened up around the final corner so can run a drum here against her own sex. IDEN DUCHEDD (4) and CLASS TELLS (5) round out the six horses field but I think place looks best.

TOP PICK: INVEST (2) the won to beat.

DANGERS: MODART NIADH (6) is the danger along with LADY OLIVE OYLE (1).

ROUGHIE: MISS SUPERBIA (3) can improve here at odds.

RATINGS: 2 – 1 6 – 3 4 5

SUGGESTED BET: MODART NIADH win just at the better odds.

This is the lowest points division of the C1. POP THE CORK (1) was very well last week to run fourth. He comes up with a much better draw and will find this slightly easier so as long as he can kick up and hold the top will give plenty of cheek out in front. OUR MAXICAM (3) has been going ok from bad draws of late. He gets a good draw here so I’m sure they will have a decent crack early to try and find the top and if he did they may not run him down. CRAFTY OLD FOX (2) was ok first up in the State but terrible last time when sat parked. They will be hoping for cover tonight and can improve if gets it. DAYRAID (7) was climbing all over their backs last week when only got out late and flashed home. It will be similar here so if the run comes early enough he can win. UNION FORCE (6) draws the top of the track which is not ideal but with any luck at all from out there will be in the finish. WRITEABOUTCHELSEA (8) was a big improver last week but was suited by a solid tempo up front she draws to get a cheap run so is a must include. BUTTERS (5) and MASTER CHARLIE (10) are next best in a tough race.

TOP PICK: POP THE CORK (1) will be hard to beat but be wary if starts to short in the market.

DANGERS: DAYRAID (7) is a danger along with OUR MAXICAM (3).

ROUGHIE: UNION FORCE (6) will run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 1 – 2 3 6 7 8 – 5 10 – 4 9 11

This is a cracking race for the three year olds and the CO performers. ROCKNROLL TURBO (10) made us all stand up and take notice at first run for Rohan Hillier when he treated his opposition with contempt. This is stronger but if he is to be a serious player in the upcoming Globe Derby Sires he will be winning this despite his horror draw. Stable mate CHENIN VALLEY (8) is a handy filly in her own right who draws to get a good run through so is sure to be thereabouts. LYNNIEMACH (6) she was very ordinary last week in much easier company. She will have to improve a 100 yards to be winning this from her wide draw so place looks best. CHADWICKS ROAD (7) tasted defeat for the first time behind the very smart Hafter last week. He will need luck from inside the second row draw but don’t be surprised to see him finish the race off strongly if gets a crack at them. POCKETS OF COURAGE (3) this ever consistent gelding rarely runs a bad race but always finds one better. If he was able to get to the pegs first he will give plenty of cheek at good odds. BLUES ACE (1) and HERBIE HAZE (9) are next best.

TOP PICK: ROCKNROLL TURBO (10) should be winning again.

DANGERS: CHADWICKS ROAD (7) is a danger along with POCKETS OF COURAGE (3).

ROUGHIE: CHENIN VALLEY (8) will run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 10 – 3 6 7 8 – 1 4 9 – 2 5

This is the highest points division of the C1. ALWAYS A SHOW (2) was very good last time where he found the top and never really got a breather but still only got run down in the shadows of the post. He should be able to find the top again so is sure to give a great sight. IMA GINGER ROGERS (6) is a very handy mare who is racing at the peak of her powers. She draws the top of the track but will have no option but to push forward and find the breeze these two should have a great battle over the last lap. PUT MBACK (1) gets the gun run on the back of the speed so is a sneaky chance at getting over the top of them at odds. BUSTED (8) never runs badly and should settle handy enough so has to be kept very safe. PABLO SANTANNA (7) should enjoy a much softer run here as will settle three pegs so look for him to be finishing the race off nicely. IDEAL DISTRACTION (3), MOBI DOC (4), CAPTURE ME (9), FAITHFUL JET (10) and MASTER PAIGE (11) are all more than capable of sneaking into a minor place at odds with the right trips.

TOP PICK: ALWAYS A SHOW (2) just as he has the draw.

DANGERS: IMA GINGER ROGERS (6) is a huge danger along with PUT MBACK (1).

ROUGHIE: PABLO SANTANNA (7) will run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 2 – 6 – 1 7 8 – 3 4 9 10 11

This is the Sheffield Cup. CHIEF DESTROYER (11) is the back marker who comes off 30m but he has earned that mark. He will be hoping to ping quickly and to make up that ground and then work into the race at some stage as that will take him a long way to winning this. MAVIS MERLE (10) is an opportunist from the Brad Walters stable who is having a purple patch at present. She will be driven for luck and more than likely be ducking and weaving through the field so if she is close enough she can finish over the top of them. RED SUN BLISS (1) is another mare that’s form is better than what it looks on paper. She will be hoping to ping away from the tapes and if was able to lob on top or leaders back will give a big sight. LORD JONES (6) is another that hasn’t had much luck of late so if he can begin safe enough and lob into a handy spot will run a race at odds. JANE GRANT (5) is a pretty tough mare who runs her best races at the front of the field so if she happened to lob in the first couple can run a race at odds. LAKE EYRE (7) is the one that will run a race at odds as long he gets into his hopples early so is a must include. PUSHKIN (8) and LIKE IT IS (9) are next best in a very tough race.

TOP PICK: CHIEF DESTROYER (11) is the hardest to beat.

DANGERS: MAVIS MERLE (10) needs luck but is the danger along with RED SUN BLISS (1).

ROUGHIE: LAKE EYRE (7) will run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 11 – 1 6 10 – 5 7 8 9 – 2 3 4

SUGGESTED BET: RED SUN BLISS on a 1 by 2 basis

This is for the C2-C3 class pacers. TIZ A JAMANE (9) was super impressive winning last week when leading throughout. He is a better horse when he leads but this is a race that lacks depth so Gareth should be able to get up and around them at some stage and whatever beats him will win. DEVIL OF TYNE (1) is first up for Kate McLeod and draws ideally as will be the leader but the question will be how much pressure will he cop out in front but either has to be kept safe. FLASH ANATOMY (3) is first up for the Yole stable from a good alley so don’t be surprised if he runs a forward race. TENFOUR (2) was much better last week when driven cold so with similar tactics here will be thereabouts. RAINBOW PHOENIX (4) will find this much easier than his last three runs so go on previous as that would give him good each way chance. WASHINGTON EXPRESS (7) draws to get a good run so if gets a crack at them will run a sneaky race. BYMARJAC (8) is another that can run into some minor as will follow the pegs throughout.

TOP PICK: TIZ A JAMANE (9) is the won to beat.

DANGERS: DEVIL OF TYNE (1) is the danger along with RAINBOW PHOENIX (4).

ROUGHIE: BYMARJAC (8) can place at odds.

RATINGS: 9 – 1 2 3 4 7 – 8 – 5 6

This is the first heat of the Granny Smith Sires Stakes for the four year old mares. LITTLE BIT OF BIG (3) is a very handy mare who had one hand on the trophy a month ago but the emergence of a couple of fillies of late adds a lot of intrigue but at this stage she is still the one they all have to beat as she can do it tough in her races and is the hardest to beat. TAMBROS MILLY (1) is one of the above mentioned who has really jumped out of the ground of late. She was able to kick up and hold the lead last time for a very impressive win when beating the well fancied stable mate so if she holds up early will give a great sight. CHICA BELLA (7) will get a cheap behind the speed so can improve as long as she settles so is a must include. KVITOVA LEIS (5) and ITZ GEMMAS DELIGHT (6) are both handy mares who have been set for this series but both draw wide so will be relying on a solid tempo as that may enable them to get very close late. AINSLEYS DREAM (2) may lob one by one and that would give her a sneaky chance if she produced her best.

TOP PICK: LITTLE BIT OF BIG (3) is the hardest to beat.

DANGERS: TAMBROS MILLY (1) is the huge danger along with CHICA BELLA (7) from the draw.

ROUGHIE: AINSLEYS DREAM (2) can run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 3 – 1 – 2 5 6 7 – 4

RACE 8: 7:49pm SEAFM MOBILE 2297M

This is for the C4-C6 performers. CHIRAC (3) faces a huge drop in class in this affair and draws handy so he should take any bad luck out of the equation. He will settle just behind the speed so gets his chance to breakthrough for another win. WEONA MASTERPIECE (1) is a very handy mare resuming and draws ideally. She has the speed to hold up but does go better with a sit so tactics will be crucial but either way is definitely in the mix. PAINT THE WIND (2) is super consistent and draws to be on the speed throughout so can never be left out of calculations. MODERN CHIC (7) is a handy enough mare who will get a good run through early so is another that has to be included. SHAKTI BROMAC (4), ANOTHER SWINGER (5) and WILLIAMLEE (6) are all handy types but will need a lot in their favour to be winning.

TOP PICK: CHIRAC (3) is the hardest to beat.

DANGERS: PAINT THE WIND (2) is the danger along with WEONA MASTERPIECE (1).

ROUGHIE: MODERN CHIC (7) will run a race.

RATINGS: 3 – 1 2 7 – 4 5 6

This is the second heat of the Granny Smith Sires Stakes. AFTER LUNCH (4) is the big query as she was here and raced in the two year old series when running second in the final. She returns for a crack at this series with fair form in Victoria so with any luck from the tricky draw will be the hardest to beat. ORDINAIRE JANE (1) is the reigning title holder of the last year’s series and that was her last run so this will be a remarkable training effort by Brooke Hammond if she can go back to back. She draws the pole here and can hold her own as there is no noted speedster off the front line so is a huge watch and a must include. TISU BOMBBELLE (5) she has been set for this series and should be cherry ripe after four runs back so will pay to keep safe despite the tricky draw. GUESSTAMATE (6) had no peace in front last week where the horse that took her on finished tailed off last. She will go back from her wide draw and look for her to be finishing off ok and can place. SHEASTANDOUT (3) continues to race ok but always finds one better and that will be the case here but can sneak a place at odds.

TOP PICK: AFTER LUNCH (4) is the hardest to beat

DANGERS: TISU BOMBBELLE (5) is the danger along with ORDINAIRE JANE (1).

ROUGHIE: SHEASTANDOUT (3) can run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 4 – 1 5 – 3 6 – 2 – 7

This is the first heat of the Raider Stakes Sire Stakes for the four year old C&G. This is by far and away the strongest of the two heats. ALL STYLE SAMMY (6) I have been in his corner for a while now and with absence of Ryley Major he gets his chance to give his trainer Michael Smith a great opportunity to give him his biggest in a couple of week’s time in the final. He draws the top of the track but I can see driver Rohan Hadley look to push forward and take bad luck out the equation to make sure he qualifies for the final. HILLVIEW JAKE (2) gets his chance here to get back to something like his best and put his hand for the rich final. I don’t think he can cross the pole marker but if he does he will give them plenty to chase around this tight circuit. METRO MOUSE (1) is an owner’s dream he never runs badly and always brings home a cheque. He has the pole so he will more than likely kick and take advantage of that and make them chase him so is a major player. The query is SPOT EIGHT (3) as he can run the arm quickly but will have to get across the two inside runners but if he did he is a major player as grows a leg in front. BAROOGA JEZZA (4) and GOGGO GEE GEE (5) are a rung below the top four so place looks best.

TOP PICK: ALL STYLE SAMMY (6) have to stick with him.

DANGERS: METRO MOUSE (1) is a huge danger along with HILLVIEW JAKE (2).

ROUGHIE: SPOT EIGHT (3) will run a race at odds.

RATINGS: 6 – 1 2 3 – 4 5

This is the second heat of the Sires. This is a heat with only three winning chances if not two. KWIATKOWSKI (2) has always been a very handy type throughout his career and looks like he really started to learn what it’s all about of late winning three in a row. He can get a bit keen at times in his races and more than likely will have to sit parked but is still the hardest to beat. GOD SAKE (1) gets the draw to cause a minor upset. Todd Rattray is just on a crest of wave in recent months and they can continue here as he will hold up early and will dictate the tempo so will give them something to chase. ART OF MY ART (3) will lob very handy either leaders back or one by one so will get his chance to get over the top of the two more fancied runners if they go hard up front. TIMELY SOVEREIGN (5) is clear fourth pick and can even run into a place as has a great record around this circuit. KARALTA DELUX (4) and MARNU THE BEAST (6) are next best with the latter going ok so can sneak into a minor first four spot.

TOP PICK: KWIATKOWSKI (2) is the hardest to beat.

DANGERS: GOD SAKE (1) is the danger along with ART OF MY ART (3).

ROUGHIE: TIMELY SOVEREIGN (5) can run a race if they go hard up front.

RATINGS: 2 – 1 – 3 5 – 4 6
