Geegees Mistruth shines bright at 2025 Tasmanian Thoroughbred Racing Awards

Geegees Mistruth has capped a stellar season by claiming three major honours at the 2025 Tasmanian Thoroughbred Racing Awards, held at Country Club Tasmania in Launceston on Friday 19 September.

The Stuart Gandy-trained mare took home Ladbrokes Horse of the Year, Armidale Stud Leading Tasmanian Racemare or Filly and the Devonport Racing Club Three-Year-Old of the Year.

Tasracing CEO Andrew Jenkins said Geegees Mistruth’s performances had captured the attention of racing fans around the country.

“Geegees Mistruth has been a shining light for Tasmanian racing this season,” Mr Jenkins said.

“Her Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes victory, Vamos Stakes win and consistent placings at Group level in Victoria demonstrate the quality of racing talent we are producing in this state.

“These awards are about recognising and celebrating the horses, trainers, jockeys, breeders and owners who make our industry so strong, and Geegees Mistruth is a perfect example of that excellence.”

The evening also celebrated three new Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame inductees:

• Wordsmith (Horse) – A dominant sire for more than a decade, producing 619 winners and more than $15 million in prize money.
• Still A Star (Horse) – One of Tasmania’s most popular race mares, who retired with 10 wins and $873,190 in stakes.
• Garry Glover (Jockey) – A celebrated rider with more than 1000 winners across Australia, Mauritius and Malaysia, including multiple Tasmanian feature victories.

Other award winners were:

• Magic Millions Leading Tasmanian-Based Juvenile Sire – Alpine Eagle
• Tasbreeders Leading Tasmanian-Based Sire – Needs Further
• Grenville Stud Tasmanian Broodmare of the Year – Miss Mana
• Tasracing Industry Appreciation – Abby Brooks
• Tasracing Owner Recognition – Robert Schaeche
• TAN Recognition Award for Services to the Industry – Merv Hill
• Carbine Club Leading Apprentice – Jackson Radley
• Winning Edge Raquel Clark Excellence – Lauryn Bingley
• TJA Dux of Apprentice School – Jackson Radley
• TRC Leading Jockey – Anthony Darmanin
• Tasmanian Trainers Association Leading Trainer – John Blacker
• Tasmanian Turf Club Two-Year-Old of the Year – Sanniya (Trained by Barry Campbell, unbeaten in two starts including the Listed Gold Sovereign and 2YO Magic Millions Classic).

Mr Jenkins said the night was an important opportunity to come together as an industry.

“These awards provide an important moment to celebrate all our winners and celebrate the dedication and passion of everyone involved in Tasmanian thoroughbred racing,” he said.

“These awards showcase the strength and resilience of our participants, and the important part racing plays across Tasmanian communities.”
