The Code of Practice (CoP) for Greyhound Welfare was introduced for consultation in August 2024.
The Code of Practice is based on the Five Provisions of Animal Welfare and covers all lifecycle stages from breeding, whelping, training and racing, to retirement. It covers physical aspects of animal welfare, such as Housing and Environment, Nutrition and Hydration, but importantly also focusses on behavioural aspects, including appropriate Socialisation and Enrichment, and preparation for life after racing. The CoP is based on similar provisions to those in operation in other greyhound racing jurisdictions.
Effective 1 September 2026, the latest updates to the CoP draw upon the most recent round of general consultation and substantial feedback received from the following stakeholder groups:

Despite continued uncertainty around the phase-out of greyhound racing in Tasmania, the CoP is vital to provide a tool for enforcing animal welfare and integrity standards and therefore retaining public confidence in the regulation of the racing industry.
Led by Tasracing Chief Veterinary & Animal Welfare Officer, Dr Martin Lenz, consultation in relation to the CoP will be ongoing with stakeholders.
