Due to the current restrictions affecting the 720m starting boxes at Launceston, amendments have been made to the 2026 Tasmanian State Championships.
Traditionally, the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club has hosted both the Tasmanian Sprint and Distance Championships. However, with no suitable staying start currently available at either Launceston or Hobart, Tasracing has, following consultation with industry stakeholders, decided to transfer the Tasmanian Distance Championship from Launceston on Thursday, 13 August to Hobart on Monday, 10 August, where it will be conducted over 599 metres.
With the 599m event at Hobart considered a superior staying event than the 600m at Launceston, the decision has been made to provide Tasmania's staying greyhounds with the best possible opportunity to qualify for the National Distance Championship Final at Sandown.
Eligibility to Nominate
There will be a minor change to the eligibility requirements for the Tasmanian Distance Championship due to the revised race date. Under the race conditions, greyhounds must have been domiciled in Tasmania for 76 days immediately preceding the close of nominations. As the Distance Championship will now be conducted on Monday, 10 August, nominations are scheduled to close on Wednesday, 5 August, bringing the domicile qualification date forward accordingly.
The conditions for the Tasmanian Sprint Championship remain unchanged.
