GREYHOUND INDUSTRY NOTICE:
KENNEL INSPECTIONS OF 'ACTIVE' REGISTERED GREYHOUNDS THAT NO LONGER COMPETE
1. PURPOSE
The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) reminds all licensed participants, including Owners and Breeders, that any registered greyhound recorded as "ACTIVE" in Ozchase is subject to routine kennel inspections and audits, even if it no longer races or breeds.
These inspections promote animal welfare, help participants meet their obligations under the Tasmanian Greyhound Rules of Racing, and keep greyhound records accurate.
2. WHO IS INSPECTED
All registered greyhounds recorded as “active”, whether breeding, racing, spelling, being educated, or not competing, are subject to the Rules.
Any licensed participant with an “active” registered greyhound in their custody, may be inspected by authorised TIU staff.
Licensed participants who keep only officially “retired” greyhounds as pets are generally not included in routine inspections, however, it is important to remember that “retired” greyhounds in the custody of a licensed participant do remain subject to the Rules.
Therefore, treatment records must be kept, and the TIU must be notified of each greyhound's location and of its death.
3. WHAT INSPECTIONS COVER
Inspectors will check that:
• Greyhounds are properly housed and cared for;
• Kennels and facilities are suitable and well maintained;
• Treatment books and records are kept as required; and
• Participants are complying with the Rules.
The TIU recognises that most participants take pride in the welfare of their greyhounds and value these inspections in maintaining industry standards and public confidence.
4. RETIREMENT
If you have an “active” greyhound that will not return to racing, you are encouraged to start the retirement process. Broodbitches must be desexed and retired once they have finished breeding.
Keeping a greyhound’s status accurate maintains the integrity of industry records and reduces unnecessary regulatory requirements. TIU staff can assist with the retirement process.
5. KNOW YOUR OBLIGATIONS
Participants should regularly review the Rules, particularly those relating to:
• Welfare and husbandry;
• Kennelling;
• Treatment records and treatment books;
• Notifications;
• Retirement and transfers; and
• Permission to euthanise and deceased greyhounds.
Participants should also familiarise themselves with the requirements of the Tasracing Code of Practice for Greyhound Welfare.
