GREYHOUND INDUSTRY NOTICE:
RETIREMENT PREPARATION VOLUNTEERS

 1.PURPOSE

The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) issues this notice to remind all licensed participants of the requirements relating to the care of greyhounds during retirement wind-down.

The TIU is aware that participants are utilising volunteers to assist with the wind-down of their greyhounds. Previously, it was against the rules for a greyhound to be in the care of, or under the supervision of, anyone other than a licensed person.

Amendments to LR21.4 and the new LR34.3, effective 1 August 2026, have been adopted to support the new Retirement Preparation Volunteer Agreement. These changes allow participants to engage unlicensed persons to assist with a greyhound's wind-down period, provided the requirements of the Agreement are met.

A Retirement Preparation Volunteer Guide has also been created to assist volunteers with this process.

LR21.4 A Greyhound must at all times be under the care and supervision of a registered person, or other person approved by the Controlling Body on such terms as required by the Controlling Body, until such time as it has been rehomed as a pet or placed with a rehoming / adoption agency

NR34(2) Subject to permission being granted pursuant to subrule (7) of this rule, a person must not permit a greyhound that the person does not train or own, to be kept at the person’s premises.

LR34.3 The Controlling Body may, upon application and for such period and on such conditions as it considers appropriate, grant an exemption from the operation of National Rule 34(2). Compliance with the terms of a granted exemption will constitute compliance with National Rule 34(2) to the extent of the exemption.

THIS NOTICE TAKES EFFECT IMMEDIATELY

Any owner/trainer that currently has a greyhound placed with an unlicenced person will be required to have an agreement completed and lodged with the TIU by close of business, Friday 28th August.

2. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

To ensure compliance with the Local Rules, it will be a requirement that the Retirement Preparation Volunteer Agreement be completed and lodged with the TIU for any dog that is placed with an unlicenced person.

This agreement should be lodged with the Operations team at operations@tasracingintegrity.com.au or by post to PO Box 1329, Launceston, Tas, 7250.
