Tasracing History

Tasracing was established in November 2008 through legislation in the Tasmanian State Parliament. Following a six-month transition period, it became a state-owned company on July 1, 2009. Operating under a constitution and Australian Corporations Law, Tasracing is managed by two members—the Treasurer and the Minister for Racing—who hold shares in trust for the people of Tasmania.

Responsibilities

Tasracing is Tasmania’s Principal Racing Authority, entrusted with the comprehensive development and promotion of the state’s racing industry. As the governing body, we oversee the ongoing growth of racing and breeding, market Tasmanian racing to local, national, and international audiences, fund race clubs, provide stakes and prize money, manage racing venues, and ensure the smooth operation of race day activities. Our work is anchored in a deep commitment to the growth and sustainability of the racing industry, with animal welfare and integrity as critically important functions.

Who is Tasracing

We invest in safe track infrastructure, drive the expansion of the Off-The-Track program to support the transition of retired racehorses, fund the Greyhound Adoption Program, and have drafted enforceable welfare Codes of Practice. for equine and greyhound care, reflecting our unwavering dedication to animal welfare.

Tasracing operates under a 20-year funding deed established in 2009, receiving partial funding as compensation for the sale of TOTE Tasmania by the government. To ensure the industry's sustainability, we actively generate additional revenue through race field fees, media rights, and sponsorships. This commercial revenue supports Tasmania's 14 racing clubs and sustains the broader industry, which employs over 6,400 people and contributes $208 million to the Tasmanian economy annually, with 40% of that directly benefitting regional communities.

With a team of dedicated employees, Tasracing is committed to advancing the industry. Our people are the heart of our success, and we’re focused on building a high-performing team that values every voice and puts the collective good first. We create a great workplace by fostering a positive culture, prioritising employee wellbeing, and ensuring everyone has equal opportunities and feels empowered to bring their authentic selves to work.

We believe Tasmania is the perfect environment for racing, not because we wish it to be so, but because it is. Our island’s natural beauty, rich agricultural heritage, and ideal climate create the perfect conditions for nurturing both human and animal talent. Tasmania is where the world’s finest produce is grown and crafted, and offers experiences that stand shoulder to shoulder with the best, often exceeding expectations. In our close-knit racing community, this advantage extends to punters and participants alike, offering greater opportunities for success. Here, breathtaking landscapes meet incredibly talented athletes and the friendliest of people, creating a perfect harmony between the excitement of race day and the dedication of those who make it all possible.

Racing has been part of Tasmanian life for well over 150 years, and we are proud to continue this rich tradition. In all we do, we are the voice for Tasmanian racing. There is simply no other racing scene in the world like ours. The spirit of Tasmania is alive and thriving trackside, on the track, off the track, behind the scenes, and under the brightest lights. Tasracing is proud to support this spirit, protecting the integrity of the sport, uplifting the Tasmanian economy, and ensuring that the legacy of racing in our state endures.
