The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) wishes to advise all registered breeders, whelpers and rearers that routine inspections of breeding, whelping and rearing facilities will be undertaken across Tasmania.
These inspections may be conducted as standalone visits or incorporated into routine
kennel inspections and are intended to support the ongoing welfare of greyhounds and the maintenance of suitable breeding and rearing environments.
As part of the licence approval process, facilities are assessed to ensure they are suitable for breeding, whelping and rearing greyhounds. The TIU appreciates the effort that participants invest in establishing and maintaining appropriate facilities.
To complement this process, periodic inspections will be conducted to ensure properties continue to provide an environment that is safe, secure and fit for purpose
for breeding animals and developing pups.
The inspections are intended to confirm that facilities continue to meet the standards
expected of licensed breeders, whelpers and rearers and that they remain suitable for raising young greyhounds.
Areas that may be reviewed include the general condition and maintenance of kennels and yards, the security of the property, the suitability of whelping and rearing areas, cleanliness and hygiene standards, and the overall welfare environment provided for greyhounds.
The inspections will also provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their facilities and management practices with TIU staff and raise any questions they may have regarding compliance and welfare requirements.
Participants are encouraged to routinely assess their facilities and ensure they remain
well maintained and appropriate for the number and age of greyhounds being housed
on the property.
Where upgrades, changes or improvements to facilities have been made, participants
should ensure these continue to align with the requirements of their licence category.
These inspections will form part of the TIU's ongoing welfare and compliance activities and are intended to help maintain the high standards already demonstrated by the majority of breeders, whelpers and rearers throughout Tasmania.
Participants involved in greyhound breeding and rearing are encouraged to visit the
Tasracing Registration and Licensing – Greyhound webpage for information relating to breeding requirements, litter registrations, applications, forms and other breeding related resources: Registration and Licensing - Greyhound
The TIU appreciates the important role licence holders play in the development and
welfare of young greyhounds and looks forward to working cooperatively with
participants to ensure facilities remain safe, secure and suitable for the raising of young greyhounds.
