The spirit of the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series was on full display when the Devon Netball Association won $10,000 thanks to the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge victory of Durazzo on 8 January.
Over 65 local clubs entered the draw to be in the running for the Carpet Charge grand prize, with that whittled down to 12 teams who were all in attendance on Devonport Cup Day.
“We’re having an absolute blast,” said Devon Netball Association president Kim Gillies.
“We don’t normally attend the races, so it’s a real novelty coming along today, and we’re loving it, even before this result.”
Sent out the heavily supported $2.10 favourite, Durazzo won a thrilling Ladbrokes Carpet Charge (1009m), grabbing Victorian visitor Beast Mode in the shadows of the post, with Alpine Wolf charging home to grab third.
In its third year, the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series offers up $76,000 in cash prizes to clubs across the state via races run on Devonport, Hobart and Launceston Cup Days.
The Roseberry Athletics Club and Turners Beach Cricket Club were the first two winners of the Carpet Charge, securing $10,000 for their respective clubs, and the Devon Netball Association are elated to be joining the honour roll.
“It’s a fantastic outcome for us; we are so excited. Our administrator, Nadine, has been nominating us for the last few years, and we were lucky enough to take the win today.
“We’re in the process of the stadium build, so we will need to upgrade our equipment. The money will go towards helping to pay for those expenses. We’re always after uniform and equipment for the girls.”
All clubs involved in the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series receive something, with sliding scale prize money based on the finishing position of their nominated horse, along with a hosted day for 10 club members at the races.
