Licensing and renewals

The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) issues apprentice jockey licences. There is no fee. At the start of each racing season you need to lodge:

  • a renewal application, with next of kin and emergency medical details
  • a full medical showing you are fit to ride
  • a satisfactory baseline concussion test
  • a Betting Information Declaration form

To renew, you must have ridden in at least 20 races in the previous 12 months. You also need to ride regularly, with no more than six weeks between race rides unless you have a reasonable explanation.

TIU contact: registrar@tasracingintegrity.com.au or (03) 6777 1900.

The TIU needs your GST and bank (EFT) details as part of your licence. For help with budgeting, link to the Moneysmart budget planner.

Changing trainers

Loans to another trainer, transfers and extensions all go to the Apprentice Jockey Panel. [Link to the form]

Visiting apprentices

Interstate apprentices need TIU approval before riding at any Tasmanian race or trial meeting. They must lodge a visiting apprentice application, next of kin details and a letter from their master. The letter needs to name who is responsible for the apprentice if the master is not at the meeting. Approval covers 48 hours unless an extension is granted for trackwork or trials.

Pay and conditions

The award

Apprentice jockeys employed by a trainer are covered by the Horse and Greyhound Training Award. The award also covers stablehands, trackwork riders, stable forepersons and training assistants. It sets minimum pay rates, allowances, hours and leave.

Your rights at work

Every employee in Australia is covered by the National Employment Standards. These are 11 minimum entitlements covering things like leave, hours of work and ending employment. Your employer must give you the Fair Work Information Statement when you start.
