The ultimate adventure for young riders who love ponies, speed, and a challenge!

Tasmanian Pony Racing is an exciting program for young riders, offering an introduction to competitive racing in a safe and supportive environment. Funded and managed by Tasracing in partnership with Pony Club Tasmania, the series is designed specifically for Pony Club-registered riders aged 9–15 years. It’s a chance for young equestrians to ride fast, learn new skills, and experience the thrill of competition, all while developing confidence, responsibility, and a lifelong love of ponies.

The series isn’t just about racing; it’s about learning, growth, and responsible horsemanship. Riders experience the excitement of the track, the pride of mastering new techniques, and the satisfaction of showing good sportsmanship. Every training day and qualifying race teaches young riders how to care for their ponies in a competitive environment, including monitoring their well-being and ensuring their ponies remain healthy, happy, and ready to perform. At the same time, riders grow in confidence, skill, and respect for their equine partners.

HOW CAN I JOIN

Tasmanian Pony Racing is open to Pony Club-registered riders aged 9–15 years, with two pony categories:

Small Pony: Up to 12.2 hands high (hh)
Large Pony: 12.2hh to 14hh

The series begins with training and qualifying days held across Tasmania. These days are designed to help riders develop skills, confidence, and advanced horsemanship in a safe and supportive environment. Riders practice control, refine techniques, and learn strategies for racing, all while maintaining the highest standards of pony welfare.

During training, riders are also encouraged to demonstrate sportsmanship, control, and responsibility, which are essential for progressing to the qualifying races. Those who excel in qualifying races are invited to compete in the State Final, held in Launceston as part of the summer racing carnival, a thrilling and memorable experience for riders and ponies alike.

From start to finish, the series emphasises learning, fun, competition, and responsible care, giving young riders the chance to challenge themselves, grow as horsepeople, and enjoy the excitement of pony racing in a safe, well-supported environment.
