30 October 2026
THOROUGHBRED & HARNESS INDUSTRY NOTICE:
SAFETY VESTS AND HIGH VISIBILITY GARMENTS
1.PURPOSE
The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) reminds all Thoroughbred and Harness Racing industry participants of their obligations regarding the use of approved safety vests and high visibility garments when attending Tasracing racecourses, training centres and associated facilities.
The safety of participants, staff, contractors and visitors remains a priority. Compliance with the applicable Track Rules is essential to minimise risks and maintain a safe working environment for everyone using Tasracing properties.
2. TRACK RULE REQUIREMENTS
Participants are reminded that the requirement to wear safety equipment and high visibility clothing applies at all Tasracing training facilities and racecourse environments.
For Thoroughbred participants, the Tasmanian Thoroughbred Track Rules require:
-
Riders undertaking trackwork or jump outs to wear an approved helmet, approved riding boots and a correctly fastened safety vest that complies with the relevant Australian Standard.
-
All visitors and persons working at training centres to wear Class D/N high visibility safety garments during training hours, around stalls and whenever working with horses.
For Harness participants, the Tasmanian Harness Track Rules require:
-
All persons driving trackwork to wear an approved helmet, approved boots and a body protector approved by Harness Racing Australia.
-
All persons working at training centres to wear high visibility attire during training hours, consisting at a minimum of an approved safety vest. Persons performing trackwork must wear a fluorescent high visibility vest.
3. COMPLIANCE ACTIVITIES
As part of ongoing safety and integrity initiatives, TIU personnel will be conducting
regular inspections and site visits at training centres, racecourses and other Tasracing
properties to monitor compliance with safety requirements.
Participants are expected to comply with the applicable safety requirements at all times.
Where non-compliance is identified, Stewards or TIU personnel will work with
participants to ensure the issue is addressed promptly. Repeated or serious instances of non-compliance may be referred to Stewards for further consideration.
4. PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES
All industry participants are encouraged to refresh their understanding of the current
Tasmanian Thoroughbred and Harness Track Rules and ensure their safety equipment
complies with the applicable standards.
Participants are also reminded to ensure that any staff, stable hands, drivers, riders,
contractors and visitors attending training facilities under their supervision are aware of and comply with these requirements.
Work health and safety obligations extend to all persons attending Tasracing properties.
A failure to comply with safety requirements places not only the individual at risk, but
also fellow participants and staff working within the racing environment.
Health and safety is everyone's responsibility and non-compliance with track safety
requirements will be taken seriously.
