Detection of Inappropriate Boxing Procedures

1. PURPOSE
The Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) issues this notice to remind participants of acceptable handling practice when loading greyhounds into the starting boxes, and to address a handling technique that has come to the attention of Stewards during recent race day operations.

2. RECENT OBSERVATIONS
Stewards have noted instances where handlers have used a greyhound's tail to assist with boxing. While this may occur without any intention to cause harm, it is not an appropriate handling technique and may cause injury to the greyhound.

3. REGULATORY POSITION
This practice may constitute a breach of GAR 80(1) – relating to the proper care and
handling of greyhounds, and GAR165(a) relating to conduct detrimentalor prejudicial to the image of racing.

4. STEWARDING APPROACH
Where this practice is observed, handlers will be required to attend the Stewards Room and be provided with guidance on correct technique. Further non-compliance may result in disciplinary action.

5. ACCEPTABLE BOXING PROCEDURE
A common and acceptable procedure when boxing a greyhound is as follows:

  • Walk the greyhound right up to the starting boxes. When directed by the Starter/Steward, remove the collar and lead, keeping the greyhound calm and focused. Many handlers position themselves over the greyhound during this process

  • Maintain control by always keeping both hands on the greyhound, typically one hand on the chest to prevent premature movement and the other under the abdomen for stability and support.

  • Assist the greyhound into the box with a steady, controlled motion. If needed, use a gentle hand on the rump to encourage the greyhound forward without causing stress or resistance.

DO NOT grip the greyhound's tail or use the tail to lift or manoeuvre the greyhound into the box.

6. REQUIRED ACTION
The TIU requires all handlers to review their boxing technique and ensure that only
appropriate handling methods are used when boxing greyhounds.
