Tasracing will introduce a new award at the annual Harness Awards Dinner - the Pauline Barker Medal that will recognise a female industry participant who has had an outstanding performance in the relevant racing season.
Pauline Barker was a trailblazer for women in the sport becoming the first female to win a race against the males in 1978 when she drove Swift Rio to victory.
She also served on the committee of the Launceston Pacing Club and Trotting Control Board while, alongside husband Fred, was a prominent owner/breeder with great success.
Pauline was selected as winner of the 2004 Edgar Tatlow Medal for her outstanding contribution to Tasmanian Harness Racing.
When told about the naming of the award, Barker said: This is such a big surprise, and I am both delighted and honoured to be involved with this award for female participants in Harness racing.”
The Pauline Barker Medal will be first awarded at the Tasmanian Harness Awards in 2027, recognising performances in the 2026 season.
As part of this enhancement to the awards program, the current Leading Female Trainer and Leading Female Driver awards will conclude following the 2026 season.
