Qualification
Apprentices complete the nationally accredited Certificate IV in Racing (Jockey) during their apprenticeship. Finishing the apprenticeship and the Cert IV is what allows an apprentice to apply for a senior jockey licence (Jockey A). The Cert IV is delivered by [registered training organisation].
Riding milestones
- Jump-outs: complete at least 10 satisfactory jump-outs over three months before riding in official trials. The Chairman of Stewards and the Apprentice Coach can approve fewer after an assessment. Every ride is recorded in the Apprentice Riding Record Book.
- Trials: complete at least 20 satisfactory trial rides over three to five months to earn a permit to ride in races.
- Race riding: ride in races with an apprentice weight claim. [Claim scale from the Local Rules]
- Graduation: finish the apprenticeship and Cert IV, then apply for a Jockey A licence.
[Program team: confirm whether the 10 jump-outs in the entry requirements count toward milestone 1.]
